Why I Chose Our Village - Jamie Hansen of Jamie Hansen Art

This year, I’ve covered an inspiring distance in my art career. As we start 2019, I’ve structured this review as an interview between my 2018 self and my current 2019 self, as I am looking back over this amazing year.

2018 Jamie:

You’ve just finished an amazing Christmas season where you booked more projects than ever before. Where did all your new clients find you?

2019 Jamie:

At the beginning of the new year, I invested in some professional SEO services for my website and I think that helped a lot. But many of my wins and blessings came from tiny seeds that I planted earlier in the year.

2018 Jamie:

What’s an example of one of those tiny seeds?

2019 Jamie:

My Etsy shop was successful at the beginning of 2018, but I knew that I wanted to pivot and move some of my sales off of Etsy. Etsy raised their fees earlier this year, which means I earn less from my sales from their website. In addition, I offer very customized products and services that require a lot of one-on-one collaboration. I felt like Etsy didn’t offer me the flexibility to collaborate with my clients the way I wanted. One of the first tiny seeds that I planted was at another internet marketplace called Our Village.

I really liked that Our Village donates 20% of their gross revenues to non-profit organizations that provide support battered or homeless women and their families. Plus, I only pay a flat $5 per month shop fee and can list unlimited items, keeping 100% of my sales!

2018 Jamie:

How long did you spend setting up your Our Village shop?

2019 Jamie:

It was really just an afternoon to set up shop there. I downloaded and used a tool that they created for my PC to copy everything - images, prices, names and descriptions - over to my new shop all at once. Then I checked to be sure that everything copied correctly. Check out the tool here.

2018 Jamie:

And then how did that tiny seed blossom?

2019 Jamie:

The staff at Our Village contacted me later that year to let me know that Country Living magazine was interested in publishing information about my customized portrait services in their December gift guide issue. I sent Country Living the requested information. About a month later, Our Village notified me when the feature was printed! I’ve received new orders from people who saw me in the magazine. I never dreamed that my little shop on Our Village could lead to a printed feature in a national magazine!

2018 Jamie:

What will you do with your shop in 2019?

2019 Jamie:

I plan to add more of my services to my Our Village storefront. That site will allow me to test out new ideas and services without having to build a website to collect sales. With no listing fees or selling fees, I can afford to post any and every idea I have to the site. I have so much more clarity and joy in my work, and I’m so excited to see what 2019 will bring!
